to the understanding of Atherosclerosis disease in the past century has been
Professor Herbert Christian Stary." judges the former president of the
American Heart Association Valentin Fuster the images about the morphology of Atherosclerosis by Herbert C. Stary. He revolutionized the comprehension, progress and genesis of Atherosclerosis substantially with this collection.
On the initiative of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Helmut Sinzinger the Gesellschaft
der Ärzte in collaboration with Professor Stary managed to create a unique online collection of his pictures.
Under the adress www.atherosclerosis-image-library.at
there are presented currently 110 images. These are categorized in 19 themes and illustrate the Atherosclerosis in human coronary arteries, while documenting impressively the formation of lesions. Furthermore they reflect the classification recommended by the American Heart Association and Prof. Stary. The pictures are characterized by impressive brightness, plenty of details and imposing esthetic quality. They are offered in different resolutions and can be downloaded and used for scientific presentations free of charge. Printable versions of the images are also available for a minor reimbursement of expenses.
Prof. Stary was born in Prague in 1932 and in 1977 he was named professor for pathology
at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
The presentation of the first 110 images in the Atherosclerosis Image Library is the beginning of this cooperation. In this project a great part of Prof. Starys work will be published.
